Studio shoot

my set up (one of them)

Today I was in the studio all morning, generally making a mess but all for a good reason! I wanted to use a studio set-up to try and show progression of how sand builds up by objects and how this is the start of dunes. I was using a hair dryer to blow sand across the tray which was what caused so much mess, the studio actually ended up looking like a beach! Anyway, studio lighting is not my strong point by any stretch so any feedback on these composites is greatly appreciated!!!

Temporary book layouts

My front cover and back cover
Chapter One title page

Pages from chapter one - 'The Beginnings of Dunes'

So I'm working with the lovely Alana on my project, she's my graphic designer and is helping me by doing the layout and font etc for the book because she can make it look good and professional which I couldn't do with my amateur indesign skills! What I've been doing is trying to put together my ideas in indesign using my images and text so that she can make it look much better! These are some of my initial layouts which Alana is currently working on...

Holywell Bay Dunes

On Friday I went over to Holywell Bay near Newquay, the end of the largest dune system in Cornwall, Penhale dunes. It's a beautiful location and one of my favourites so far as it's got a car park and easy access and it's a lovely area. I spent most of this shoot getting to grips with filming on the D7000 because I want to create a short video trailer for my project/the book but I did get a few shots while I was there before the rain really kicked in!
Showing the important Marram grass on the dunes overlooking the bay.

Image for the 'strandline' page of the book. The strandline is very important as it causes the initial build up of sand leading to the formation of dunes.

These boulders on the beach show a great example of how sand builds up around an object that slows the wind down.

Welcome

Hi,
Welcome to my new blog. I'm currently living in Falmouth, Cornwall and in my last year studying BA (Hons) Marine and Natural History Photography. I hope to update the blog with my images and progress towards my final project; 'An educational study of Sand Dunes for children'. I am creating a book on Sand Dunes aimed at KS2 children to link with the national curriculum with the aim to being used as an educational aid in schools.
I'll also no doubt include other work and thoughts from my day to day life.
Hope you enjoy!
Thanks,
Kay
